AREA INFORMATION
River Grande is located at 1415 NW 15th Ave., Miami, Florida, east of Miami International Airport and west of Downtown Miami
SHOPPING - As a gateway to
the Caribbean and the Americas, Greater Miami brims with cosmopolitan malls,
shopping districts, and outdoor markets. Dadeland -- Miami-Dade's oldest mall
with Florida’s largest Macy’s as well as Macy’s Home Gallery & Kids -- also has
Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, JCPenney, and the largest The Limited / Express
Store in the nation, plus nearly 200 other specialty shops. Where World War II
army barracks once stood, the ultra-luxurious, comparatively intimate Bal
Harbour Shops has its own concierge plus shops and department stores from
Cartier and Gucci to Saks Fifth Avenue and the first Neiman-Marcus outside
Texas. With interior waterfalls and lagoons, The Falls anchors the city’s south
side with upscale specialty stores, restaurants and a theater complex. In
Coconut Grove, Coco Walk’s three floors of specialty shops are interspersed with
popular eateries and clubs. The Streets of Mayfair, also in Coconut Grove, is an
open-air shopping promenade including a Borders Books Music Cafe. The Dolphin
Mall, in west Dade with a Marshall’s megastore, has some 200 outlet venues,
including dining and entertainment. DINING - As the commercial, cultural capital of the Americas, Miami’s dining scene reflects burgeoning diversity, mixing exotic newcomer restaurants with long-standing institutions, often seasoned by Latin influence and hot winds of the Caribbean. New World cuisine, a culinary counterpart to accompany Miami’s New World Symphony, provides a loose fusion of Latin, Asian, and Caribbean flavors utilizing fresh, area-grown ingredients. Innovative restaurateurs and chefs similarly reel in patrons with Floribbean-flavored seafood fare, while keeping true to down-home Florida favorites, sometimes called cracker cookin’. Among the most renowned of Miami’s upscale restaurants are Norman’s, created by Chef Norman Van Aken, and Chef Allen’s in Aventura, namesake of Allen Susser, creator of his renowned five course tasting menu. Joe’s Stone Crab, at the southern end of South Beach, reigns as a king of crab palaces, recently heading out to sea with annexes aboard Carnival’s Fun Ships. Another institution, The Forge, is known for rare antiques, exquisite objects d' art and a 300,000-bottle wine cellar. Tasty Cuban cuisine is served at hundreds of cafés and bodegas in and around Little Havana, while Colombian, Nicaraguan, Puerto Rican and other Latin flavors are also readily available. Early bird dinner specials, always popular with retirees, remain plentiful in Miami. Yet with dining out an essential part of Miami nightlife, no patron need ever fear restaurants will roll up their sidewalks shortly after sundown. In fact, that’s when trendy South Beach outposts begin to sizzle.
TRANSPORTATION - If you do
not wish to rent an automobile, there are several economic methods of Miami
public transportation available throughout the city. Metrorail's elevated rapid
transit system runs from Kendall through South Miami, Coral Gables, and downtown
Miami; to the Civic Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital area; and to Brownsville,
Liberty City, Hialeah, and Medley in northwest Miami-Dade, with connections to
Broward and Palm Beach counties at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station. The
22 accessible Metrorail stations are about one-mile apart, providing easy access
for bus riders, pedestrians, and passengers dropped off and picked up. Parking
is available at 19 Metrorail stations, including the new Palmetto Station..
Attractions -
Miami is not only sandy beaches and art deco. This
cosmopolitan and modern city is full of attractions for all ages and needs. The
attractions are so broad that you can get all you need, want or dream off as
soon as your arrive at Miami International Airport.
ENTERTAINMENT - Greater
Miami’s legendary night scene sizzles with possibility, driven by fashion and
entertainment industry mavens. Dubbed the Sun and Fun Capital by Jackie Gleason
in the ‘60s, Miami Beach has since evolved into America’s Riviera and a Latin
Hollywood, with theatrical flair. Television’s circa ‘80s Miami Vice has morphed
into Miami Vice: The Movie, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, with other
memorable made-in-Miami flicks ranging from Goldfinger, The Birdcage, and
Something About Mary to 2 Fast 2 Furious, Bad Boys, Bad Boys 2 and Out of Sight.
As a result, celebrity spottings are a de rigueur reality of Miami nightlife --
at live Latin jazz venues, on dance floors of hipper-than-thou clubs, and
restaurants that transform as evenings progress from venues for guava cheesecake
dessert courses into wee hours nightclubs.
